Distorted Freedom

“Distorted Freedom” creates a visual alteration in the person who wears it. The composition of the mask was designed with geometric shapes so that the person could wear it with support and durability. This sculpture has elements of virtual reality because it distorts the way that the person sees the world and the way they feel due to the discomfort of the invasive sculpture. They are able to see metal grids, open geometric holes and wood. There is a closed off feeling from wearing this mask, it feels as if the person is in a confined environment even though they have the freedom to move in a large space.

Hermione and I added the metal grid to create a feeling of distortion so that the person could only see clearly through some of the shapes having an impaired vision through the ones covered by the metal grid. This inspired the name “Distorted Freedom”. The idea that the person is trapped half under the mask and can see clearly only looking in certain angles.
