Metropolitan Mash-Up

For our final project we took a group field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With our class keyword being “things,” I asked each student to focus their attention on three-dimensional objects in the museum. The goal was for
students to sketch six different objects from six different cultures and time
periods. From those initial sketches, each student developed a series of thumbnails combining different elements from the sketched objects. For the final large-scale drawing assignments, each student created a composition that incorporated elements and patterns from the hybrid objects. To the right is a page taken from a student’s final portfolio that details the process. Throughout the semester we utilized the sketchbook as a space to show process and reflect through writing about projects completed in class.
