(New York Comics and Picture Story)

On November 14 I attended a special art lecture in my college. The speakers, “Mark Newgarden and Paul Karasik” came to my college: and taught us about “On how to read Nancy, The Elements of Comics in Three Easy Panels”. When I entered the small lecture room, I thought that it would be empty. But, to my surprise, it was very crowded and full of people. It was so crowded that I had to stand up for the presentation with many others. There were many college-aged students along with many elderly audience members, which I thought was very interesting. I reflected that the elder audience members might have enjoyed reading Nancy comics when they were younger, and were very familiar with it. The speakers began by introducing the history of Nancy in a clear and easy manner. I learned that Nancy is an American daily and Sunday comic strip, written and drawn by Ernie Bushmiller and distributed by United Feature Syndicate. The character of Nancy chubby and eight-year-old first appeared in the strip Fritzi Ritz. This was the first time I saw the character Nancy in my life, I am however familiar with other comic characters such as Snoopy and Disney. I thought that because Nancy was popular in the early 1920’s, this was why I had no experience with this comic. Nevertheless, when I saw the Nancy character, I thought she is very cute and simple. I like the artist’s use of black and red color combination for her because it looks very friendly and makes the readers feel close to her.
