My first step in the making of this project was to do a brainstorm. I gathered in one page all the elements of the interview and those that grabbed my attention during my visit at Ieva’s apartment.
My very first idea was to combine in one installation Ieva’s mysterious aspect, her love for fruits, and her favorite object in the apartment (Vinyl record player). Hence, I wanted to represent her mysterious aspect with curtains, her love for fruits with fruits placed behind the curtain and behind the fruits, on a white screen, a projection of a vinyl record player playing her favorite music genre. I wanted this installation to be interactive, as when the viewers open the curtains, they discover what they didn’t know: her love for fruits and the vinyl record player as her favorite object in her apartment. Unfortunately there were too many elements, which would make my installation unclear. I decided to simplify.
My second idea was based on Ieva’s love for fruits, the vinyl record player as her favorite object and her recent move to Paris. As she recently moved to Paris, a new environment for her, I decided to represent her through objects:a fruit and vinyl record player. For that, I decided to take many pictures all around Paris and add to them the black and white filter. With photoshop, I wanted to add to these black and white pictures the fruit and vinyl record player with their original color, a way of highlighting Ieva’s presence in this new environment. As the idea wasn’t very appealing, I decided to find something else.
My third idea was focused on the fact that Ieva draws in big and that she sees in big. I therefore decided to represent that with a huge pencil placed next to a huge piece of blank paper. Then, I thought of replacing the piece of paper with a huge sketchbook to make the idea of the drawing clearer. Unfortunately, I didn’t know what to put in the sketchbook and I didn’t know how to make a huge one. In addition, I felt that this idea wasn’t entirely revealing Ieva’s environment. Therefore, I decided to expand on this idea, and came up with the fourth and final one.
