Oihana.

An Environmental Projet: Oihana.

This project was about representing a friend through their environment.

When I went to Oihana’s place, I thought that her room was not representing who she was. She explained to me that living with a roommate and sharing the apartment with two other was not something she was used to and therefore, I felt like she felt uncomfortable and not quite settled in to Paris yet, which showed in her room.

The one piece of decoration that stood out to me in her space was a drawing of flowers that her mother did and that she loved dearly.

After that, we started talking about what she liked to do and about her art, but the main subject that stuck to my mind was that she loved and used a lot of frames. The idea of including frames into her pieces made me think about what their meaning might be to her.

So for her portrait, I choose to represent a take on the flowers of her mothers drawing, that surrounds an orchid. The orchid itself has flowers made in a different style that what I usually do. I wanted to push myself and work with her way of working, meaning illustration. Every flower represents a field of interest of hers.

The painting is almost inclosed in a ”frame” on which I wrote a reflection on my thought on why she likes frames so much, in Spanish, to make it more personal to her since she comes from Venezuela. The ”frame” is however not closed at the edges like the typical ones. It was because I wanted the writing to represent the idea of a frame, with my ideas wrote on it.
