Gezi Parkı

Publics and Objects of dispute: Gezi Parkı

The aim of this project was to reflect on an object, event or even an idea that has caused controversy.

In my group, we chose to work with Gezi Parkı, a demonstration that happened in Turkey in 2012, that first started out as a resistance against the demolition of a park to build storage space for the government, but then builded up to become a riot against the government itself.

The riots were usually led by the youth of Istanbul, making the demonstrations appear on multiple social media platforms. As the event was silenced by the government, the participants acted in a pacifist way, demonstrating by standing up or doing yoga, joking around about the way their voices were not heard via television because the government was blocking the channels.

The sedicessimo shows an assembly of images, both taken during the Gezi Park movements and ones that are somehow connected to them.

By arranging it in 3 cuts, the reader can link different photos with each other and find a new way to interoperate the riot.
