Murs Allison – Meghan Hancock

To be blunt, I did not think this was a productive use of our time. Murs did prepare a well-thought-out presentation, but he ended up mostly just repeating himself and trying to advocate that being an influencer and leading fake life outways all the negative aspects and connotations that come along with it. As most students in that room were millennials, we had all been aware of what an influencer was prior to this presentation. Although it was interesting to hear the “inside scoop” per say, I personally didn’t learn anything. I do agree that this was an interesting way to view media and media consumption in a technological ramp society that we live in today, I came out slightly confused.

I will hand it to Murs though, he seems to be making decent money from this while still thoroughly enjoying it. There was one point he made that stuck with me, he mentioned that it wasn’t all fun and games and he had lost friends over this “new found fame” and he spends most of his days planning photoshoots or going to events because he needs to create content. I can’t imagine what that must be like to constantly go through life considering different places as “photo ops” or deciding what to do based on how many Instagram likes it will get. The one thing I took away from this is that I do in some ways have a newfound respect and disrespect for influencers. I respect them for how hard they hussle and work to keep this act, but it also makes me aware of the fact that most of them are just doing everything to please others, which I don’t agree with.
