Virtual Structure of Baldwin

Create a piece that illustrates the shifts in Baldwin’s Freaks and American Ideal of Manhood.

In Baldwin’s essay, Freaks and American Ideal of Manhood, Baldwin discusses the societal pressures that define masculinity, femininity and one’s sexuality through broad discussions with the reader and personal experiences. Max and I chose to focus on the main ideas of the structure of the essay, we noticed a pattern throughout. The lighter weight lines illustrate the wide ideas and the more concentrated lines depict the harsh and brash realizations that Baldwin had personally experienced. We included words such as GAY, SOCIETY, BLACK, WHITE, all words that we found showed progression of Baldwin’s ideas throughout the essay.
