Presenting Self: Bio

Amaya Avila is an undergraduate Communications Design major at Parsons School of Design. Avila was born on August 8, 1999, in Dallas, Texas.

Avila had a passion for the arts throughout her childhood and explored this through a variety of outlets, music, dance and visual arts. During her junior high school career, she found herself performing on stage in her junior high school’s theatre department, she felt most comfortable on stage. After her first year of high school, she applied and auditoned for Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, located in downtown Dallas. She was one of four accepted sophomore students to attend the prestigous magnet school. From discovering the theatre arts program, she was introduced to the performing arts production world through stage management, directing and finally landed in the theatre department’s costume design program. In her second year at Booker T. Washington HSPVA, she applied for a costume design position in the professional production of Oklahoma! The Musical, directed by Dallas Theatre Center’s Joel Ferrell.  

Outside of school and extracurriculars, Amaya was always interested in art and graphic design, so she explored visual arts on her own time. With this passion, she committed to pursuing a degree in Communications Design here at Parsons School of Design. During her first year, she has explored many mediums and challenged herself to create with new materials. Amaya’s work is a reflection of her connection with her identity as a female Mexican American and involves her personal relationships and their impact. She is highly interested in the power of typography and computer graphics, creating art in the digital world.

 

Amaya lives and studies in New York City.
