Greta Gerwig – Female Voice

I have seen Gerwig’s film with both of my parents separately, each time I felt a different, but impactful connection while seeing this character, “Ladybird” figure life out at an age that I am physically connected to. The film, both written and directed by Greta, tells the story of a girl named Ladybird go through a major shift from senior year of high school in Sacramento, CA to a college student in New York. The cast. The costumes. There is an extreme exploration in a mother-daughter relationship, this is something that I have battled with throughout my childhood. My personal relationship with my mother is one of the most important connections in my life and I feel like there is a lack of representation. Though the story is specific, this transition of age is relatable for all audience members and the search for “personhood”. Ladybird was my favorite film of 2017, it felt so raw and the female power aspect is something that is very relevant in today’s current events, I have seen and read many interviews and from her comes a strong passion and humbleness about the masterpiece she created. The entire artistic process of this film is motivating as a female and excites me because I am looking to pursue a career in an art I feel so passionate about.
