Bridge 1 Artist Statement

I purchased this camera in a small thrift store in Gun Barrel City, Texas for a dollar. I had no knowledge on its performance abilities or if it was able to be turned on or off.

I want to create a series that embodies the physicality and emotional observances I inherit with this object, an Olympus Zoom211, a 35 millimeter film camera from 1994. The first piece is centered on the visible control that the user pushes and presses, on this compact object, there are words that are placed on the camera for instructional and informational purposes, the first piece shows the physical mechanics and the functional aspects of the camera. Through the process of taking a photo, the user aims for a frame through the viewfinder, the second piece is a film test photo I took and printed. The process of developing film is the difference between a digital camera and analog photos. The third piece depicts the chemical process of a roll of film. When capturing a moment, the presence of light can effect the quality of a moment on film, the fourth piece expresses the spectrum of light and dark and its impact on the art of analog photography. The last piece is a childhood photo, which captures the concept of a memory and the past, a film camera is considered “old” or vintage in relation to the technological advancements, so with using a black and white photo it epitomizes the past and reads as melancholic tone.
