REUSE OR LOSE
Recycle PSA- “Reuse or Lose”
Film opens up with two coffee cups (one with blue lid (boy) and one with red/pink lid (girl) having tea poured into them and two different people are holding each cup walking out of the cafeteria. As time passes by through the day, the two cups encounter each other in scenarios such as direct contact (the two people cheers), a room where the two people are painting, and a situation in which the two are sharing a snack. In a sense both cups begin to “fall for each other” through these scenarios. At the end of the day, the two people drinking from the cup throw the cups away into the recycling bin however one person misses the bin and the red cup (girl) ends up falling onto the ground as the two humans walk away. The blue cup is left in the recycling bin alone wondering where the red cup is. A shot of the red cup is shown left alone on the ground. A random person then walks in and picks up the red cup- camera shot begins alternating in a pan form between the garbage and the recycling bin with the hand and red cup in the shot. This idea implies that the person who picked up the cup is deciding which bin to throw the cup in.
The film ends with text saying, “how should it end?” and transitions to it coming to a final end saying “You decide.”
The reason I decided to do this film is because public service announcements are usually formatted in a way in which it leaves the audience not only aware of the subject matter, but sometimes scared or nervous. I wanted to achieve a PSA that can both speak to the audience while shown in a lighthearted matter. I thought that it would be nice to tie in a little love story within an announcement that leaves the audience smiling while being aware of the importance to recycle.
