What is “fake”? (What does it mean/ why is it important)
To me, fake is something that is not what it appears to be. It can be perceived through a physical aspect (counterfeit items), through an act (fraud), and even through communication (genuineness within a person). This concept of fake is important because it allows us to differentiate what is real and what is not. It is important to not only define what is fake through obvious matters such as counterfeit bags or forgery, but realizing that we are constantly surrounded by this concept whether we know it or not.
What are three key concepts you took away from this semester?
Simulacra
Performativity
Pastiche
What are three skills you got from the course?
Being able to dig deeper when examining something that is fake and how it affects us. Applying the key concepts to our everyday life and relating the things I learned with the way I perceive things.
Which assignment did you feel best practiced these skills and concepts?
The persona project allowed us to come out from our shell and visually express a person’s character through writing and an art piece which I found very intriguing.
What concepts or skills from the course have you used in other courses (other than studio)
My time class where we also did a persona project and sound project similar to my seminar and studio.
Studio Final Reflection
During this course, I have expanded my knowledge on the concept of ‘fake’. With the help of seminar, it made it easier for me to create my pieces based on the things I learned- I then applied everything I learned to my work. I enjoyed being able to create a visual form of fake through the art pieces in studio class. I also tried new things this course such as sound which is something that I am open to learn more about in the future. I intend to major in fashion and I find many links from this course that can be used in fashion design.
