Jumping Jumpsuit
Just like any project, the “Jumping Jumpsuit” project allowed me to explore my skills and abilities as a designer. This particular project not only helped further my capabilities as an artist, but it also gave me the opportunity to work with a partner which showed me the importance of teamwork. Of course when working in partnership, it is crucial to have mutual respect towards one another if we want our piece to be successful. That being said, my partner and I were able to balance out our differences in aesthetics and in approach, thusly creating a garment we were both content with.
We started off this project by being assigned a dancer as well as a partner. From there, we were told to meet up with our dancer and get their measurements as the point of this project was to design a costume for one dancer in the dance department in the New School. The style of the dance is modern so therefore loose fitted clothing was ideal. With our partner, we then had to come up with a sketch of our design for our dancer. Initially, my partner and I designed something way too complicated for the style of dance that we were working our designs around since we did not fully grasp at the beginning of this project that simplicity and minimalism was the key for this particular dance group- of course, we know that now and understand the unification of modern dance with our minimalistic design.
From there we were told the color palette consisted of whites and shades of grey, which for me, is a huge plus because all of my own work follow that same color scheme. Because we have already worked with knits in our first project, I was equipped with better knowledge and skills when working with our fabric as well as using the many different machines (serger, superlock, coverstich, etc.). Constructing the garment went fairly smoothly since our jumpsuit went straight down from top to bottom. At the beginning of constructing, my partner and I both applied our strong suits in different areas of the garment but as we got to the end of the project, since the whole garment was one piece, the division of work between us became a slight challenge since only one of us could work on the garment at a time. However in the end, we were both able to balance out what we had to do to contribute to the garment. All in all, this project strengthened my skills not only in sewing but in communication and cooperation.
