Integrative Studio 2: Fashion – Documentation of Silk Scarf

Based on the initial pattern research I did at the beginning of the semester, I was instantly drawn to the geometric values in some of the pieces. As I continued doing more research, I became drawn to some of the intricate Chinese culture designs as well. With deeper insight, I found intricate designs of dragons and other Asian symbols that inspired me to create the hidden letter ā€œGā€ in my design. (G being the first letter of my name). Because of my interest in both the geometric aspect of design and the Chinese aesthetics, I decided to create an even balance of both design concepts while still maintaining a piece that is visually pleasing to the eye. The color schemes within my piece mainly consist of vibrant colors, Fuchsia and Yellow along with White- to show a contrast within my designs. . Although it was not exactly what I had intended on doing from the start, with a couple bumps here and there, I am happy to say that I am pleased with the final result of my piece.

Since I have never done printmaking, this project allowed me to expand on my design aesthetics. I had a lot of fun creating my print and working with the inks and silk scarf.

I started off with my print that I carved out on the block, and a piece of the rubber block I cut out to create the borders as you will see further down on the page.

The block on the right is the back side of my print block and will be used to print the solid pink square of my scarf.

I came up with a variety of ways to wear my scarf. Here are a few of my favourites:

Overall, this project was extremely fun and enjoyable. I have gained skills and experience in printmaking and I will be able to apply these techniques in my future projects.
