36-3=33

This is a series of photographs taken that represents time in one way or another. Besides of “time” being the largest theme of this series, I have narrowed down the wide theme, by taking photos of things we have to wait for. “Waiting” is one of the aspects that could reflect and represent time. Waiting for hair to grow, waiting for a shop to open, waiting for weather to get cold etc. The series is named 36-3=33, because it’s always nice to be able to reduce time for waiting, and anticipating.

Reflection on Schütz’s “The Stranger”

In “The Stranger” by Schütz, he mentioned that inside every community, the “in-group” has their own “recipe”, their own way on dealing with problems and coming up with solutions. The formation of this recipe is heavily influenced by the custom and cultural pattern of the particular community. The passage is really relevant to me as an international student coming to live and learn in the United States, because the western and eastern culture has drastic differences and the “inconsistency, incoherence and lack of clarity” would affect and change my “recipe” when encountering problems here in the States. Asian community would refrain comments, opinions and thoughts when communication, as a respect for others, we would not be really talkative. However, in the western community, my “matter of course”, developed with the cultural pattern of my own community, would be challenged and would undergo crisis. Therefore, i would take the advice from the passage, where the passage has pointed out the fact that we, as strangers, should not assume the situation with our general knowledge, instead we need to define the situation and obtain explicit knowledge of the new place.
