This is a project that we need to find total 72 pictures and created grid taxonomies, 36 of the pictures should be the signifiers and the rest 36 should be art works that related to the topic. My topic is identity and I found all my 72 images though online research. This is for us to better develope our themes and narrow down our topics.
The signifiers I found are our characters like hair, skin color, eyes, face expression, and also some daily objects that reflect identity or how others to category people like mirror, tattoo, etc. or your life style, like vegetarian or not. I choose those signifier based on the art works that I chosen.
What I learned about my topic through this image collection exercise was identity could not only be those traits that you have but also the external things that related or reflected you. What was most challenging about this research was how to be diverse on the signifiers, so I did find the artworks first. Inspired by the elements within the artwork, I could find more signifiers that is related to my topic. It tells me that when doing research, if you cannot find more about one thing you can consider the question in another way, do the second thing first. That way the other related work may inspired you when you doing research. My topic will be about how dose the identities that we realized caged or limited us in our life.
Talks about my idea to other people helps me to organized my thoughts and make me think more about it, not only the first time reaction to the topic. It makes me be more clear on my topic. When others describing my works, they may find out something that I didn’t think about when I make that decision. by doing taxonomy, I get more inspration from other artist.
