Inquiry into an object, form, or image

This project asked us to further explore the topic that we choose on the last project and to find more about our chosen object. We are asked to choose an object from our taxonomy and choose a method that we come up in the mind map.

My topic is how the identity shapes you and limited us and the object that I chose from the taxonomy is mirror and I decided to draw it digitally.

Mind Map: mirror

  1. Dose mirror really reflect us? The inspiration is the sticky note that I saw on my bathroom mirror that reminds me a psychological study that I saw on internet a few weeks ago. It said that human are greatly influenced by the outside world and because of that even our appearance that we see on the mirror, in most case we assume it is exact, will change. Even you think you are a very brave person who do not care what people are thinking about you, you are still under the influence of others. So it makes me think about who we really are. You are not you, but a combination of other’s opinion about you. https://www.2knowmyself.com/5_reasons_a_mirror_cant_really_tell_you_how_you_look_like
  2. What is mirror? In ancient China, the character for mirror also means observation or review by others. We believes that without the review from outside, we will be lost track in life. http://www.epochtimes.com/gb/9/12/3/n2742463.htm
  3. What are people thinks about mirror. The story about Emperor Taizong of Tang. One of his minister give him a mirror and tell him this mirror can distinguish bad and good people. However he said he didn’t want this gift. “I have three mirrors and that’s enough. We use cooper as mirror, can only organize our cloth; use history as mirror, can understand the pattern of rise and fall; use other people as mirror, we can understand ourselves.” Said Emperor Taizong of Tang. http://sientechina.china.com.cn/chinese/zhuanti/xxsb/560823.htm

For this diptych I choose to draw it out electronically, because I want to in imitated the texture of spray paint that is paint on the bathroom mirror. Although it is an alternative way, I think it still deliver the message I want express. Use just lines make the figure less obvious, so the sticky notes become the first thing that catches the viewer’s eyes. After the critic, I got the comment that it is good to make the diptych covers the face of the character. Also, classmates think that the setting is a very good place, because bathroom is a very intimate space.1.Should I choose a different setting2. Should I add more detail on the figure?3. Should I choose a different color?

For this diptych I choose to use wire and wool to create a sculpture. The wire cage is the words and comments from outside that are caging us. The first figure is inside the cage. It is limited by the words, although other might not meant to hurt them. The second is using these comments to achieve a better self. The wire is a good representing of limiting and it is easy to interpret as cage.

For this diptych I choose to use wire to create a sculpture. The wire structure is the repersentive of the way to your goal. It is different from every respective that you look at it. However it is the same the start will very hard. So don’t let the start sacred you and keep climb to where you want to be. Use wire to representing the way to your goal.

For this diptych I choose to use paper paint blade and wool to create a sculpture. The first figure is a head. It express its opinion and have no idea that it will hurt other, although it might not meant to hurt them. The second is the heart that reciving the comment. The blade is a good representing of hurting and it is easy to understand.

1. Should I use wire for the figure as well?
2. Should I use a  different material?
3. Should I change the posture of the figure?

After critic, I got comments about the gesture of the second figure. So I changed the figure from lying on the wire to standing on the wire.
