In this project, I have done 3 series of currencies which documents the past, present, and future of the monetary system.
My visit back to China inspired me to make these pieces. In China, no one uses cash anymore, everyone frequently uses QR codes to pay for food and groceries. Many restaurants and marts don’t even accept the payment method of cash- they simply do not have change. Numerous places still do take in cards, however, the most prevalent method of paying for your daily expenses is the scan of QR codes.
This made me reflect on the convenience of spending. The faster it is for the payment to occur, the more we spend due to its convenience. And I think this is also a huge stigma which causes the issue of over-spending. Hence, I would like to capture this progress of change in my works from paper money, to cards and finally, to the futuristic QR codes which are most likely the most prevalent payment method in the next 3 years.
