Fabric Story:
Draping and Sketches:
After I photographed my drapes, I printed the images and used tracing paper to sketch into my drapes. I find this method helpful in understanding how the drapes formed with line. As a practice, I think I was able to get a better understanding of the way the different fabrics draped by draping directly on the form and by sketching over the images. For the outcome of this practice, I think many of my fabrics are contrasting in that some are hard and fold while others like the crepe fall and drape softly. I like that the pastels colors and the more jewel-tone colors contrast as well as the soft fluidity and the hard and raw fraying edges of the linens and tweeds. I feel like this collection of fabrics has the right amount of wrong to throw off the pretty pastel palette to make it fun and poppy. As I am working more with the shapes and the textiles in manipulating and draping, I think this collection is taking on a rugged pretty pretty princess feeling. This is an interactive game that I used to own as a child where you dress up and put on jewels to become the princess. The rugged vibe of the other fabrics contrasts this feeling and gives the idea more complexity, mixing soft and pretty with rugged to create a complex character and story. I like the idea of this direction for my collection’s inspiration, and I also find it interesting to work from the fabrics and drapes first rather than from an idea and inspiration in which you need to find the fabrics to follow after.
