For the final project, I made the list of objects I encountered in a specific time frame and documented them. I then separated the list of objects into the categories of care and not care. The care category contained the following objects: a toiletries case from my friend, a bag that my mom bought me on Block Island, my hair cream, Washi Tape with interesting designs that I bought for decorating my dorm, a photograph of me and my friend at prom, a magazine tear out sheet on my wall of a Guido Palau mask from a magazine, a pair of shoes, a rubber duck from London, and my art supplies bin that I’ve had since i took AP art in high school. The not care objects include: my glasses, a cutting mat, a mirror, a k-cup, half of a ukelele, a Tide Pod container, and Carmex.
I chose to display the objects I care about in color and the objects I don’t care about in black outline. I did blind contours of each object I did not care about because it got the general message of each object across without putting effort into the detail. I then uploaded a photo of each sketch onto Illustrator and used the pen tool to trace the outline of each image. For the objects I care about, I sketched, colored with colored pencil or colored pencil and gouache. The color and detail shows how much I care about these objects compared to the others. I then created a collage of the images on Illustrator. I Image traced the sketches of the obejcts I cared about to give them a smoother look like they are digitally painted. I wanted to create a kaleidoscope-like pattern in which the objects I care about are placed more towards the center. I placed the objects I care less about towards the outside of the pattern. Certain objects I care deeply about are repeated more times than others to show the scale of care I have towards the objects. Also, for the pair of shoes and the hair cream I took photographs and image traced them because they are probably the two objects I care the least for in the care category. This means that I still kept them cohesive with the look of the care category but did not include as much hand detail.
I printed the final image from Illustrator on the plotter with a large scale because I want the image to have an impact and allow the viewer to see the detail in each object as well as the pattern. A viewer can stand far away and look at the pattern as one whole grouping of objects, but also look closer and interpret the differences within the whole.
