The image I choose is an advertisment of Jil Sander summer collection of 2017. It is showing a side view of a female model’s top body part but without her face. We can see that she is a white with extremely slender body shape, and also has blonde hair. This type of appearance has shown in fashion world so often that almost everyone would consider all models should fit to it. The model’s body has taken up almost 2/3 bottom part of the whole image, with her arm placing forward her main body part, which gives a fleeing that she just wake up from her bed or doing something that are relaxing. According to Douglas’s quotes in the article ” Joanne Entwistle – “The Dressed Body” in Real Bodies: A Sociological Introduction“, “the body is a highly restricted medium of expression that expresses the social pressure brought to bear on it.” (p138). In most societies, especially non-western countries, it is not appropriate for females to not wearing bra in from of others. However, in this advisement, the model does not wearing her bra but wearing a loosen garment, giving customers a sense of freedom and no restriction of body movement to females’ bodies. It has been a social movement that there are more and more females are calling for the freedom of having right to choose whether or not wearing bra. However, this advisement also fits to a main principle of the fashion world that exposed female body implies to a sign of sex attraction, even though the main target customers are females but not males. The model in the advisement almost showing her breast without showing her nipple because of the covering of garment. As everyone knows, lots of fashion advertisements are playing very closely to the threshold between the topic of “sex” and “art”. In other words, the image creator of this advisement also wants to use this idea to attract attentions from customers. What’s more, a strap in the middle of the image is hanging causally from model’s shoulder as if the whole garment will fall and her body will show without any cover in from of the customers.
