NYC LIVING ROOM(GRAPHIC NARRATIVE)-Book Cover Design
NYC Living Room(Graphic Narrative)-Book Cover Design is the first actual group work followed the earlier individual project NYC Living Room(Graphic Narrative). Our group include four members: Eric, Lara, Summer and Susan. The purpose for the book cover design was to use the format of group work to combine elements from each person’s original project into a new one within one week. To achieve the final goal, we assigned each members different works through three times we met. It was hard for us to set an agreement in the beginning because we found out that combining four absolutely different style of project was extremely challenging. However, we shared the same idea that the design of book cover should never be restricted to two dimensional. So, we began brainstorming from how we can make our book cover into three dimensional. Also, we thought a book cover was no longer a piece of paper that could only offer the title of the book, but something that was cool and fun to play with. So, we took the elements from Summer’s project: a big dinosaur head as the main character on the book cover. We shaped the dinosaur into three dimensional so that viewers could actually touch and then feel how the book was going to take them before they actually opened it. We spent a long time in the art supply store selecting a material that was light and had the ability to took the texture of dinosaur to readers, in the end, we chose the soft clay. The back ground of the cover was one of Susan’s book pages, it was well painted by water color and covered by shining powders. Lara’s chocolate letters were shown as the tile of the magazine for the reason that she used chocolate in her own project and we found the chocolate was fun. During the process of making the dinosaur, we came up with the idea that the throat of dinosaur could be a tunnel for Susan’s character to be put in. After hours of work, the book cover was finally presented and showed what we expected: revolutionary to look and fun to play with.
