April 1st of 2017: journalist and satirist Daniel Samper Ospina releases a controversial YouTube video that questions the values and honesty of Colombia’s right wing leaders. July 14th of 2017: through his Twitter account, conservative leader and former president Alvaro Uribe Velez falsely accuses Samper of being a “child rapist.” November 9th of 2017: Daniel Samper Ospina wins the prestigious Simon Bolivar Award, which celebrates honesty and integrity in journalism.
All over the world, humor is constantly used as a means of political resistance and social activism. In 2017 one of the most celebrated contemporary satirists in Colombia, Daniel Samper Ospina, organized a brave humorous political stunt that was incredibly controversial but also eye opening and enlightening. Transcending traditional practices, his twelve-minute satirical YouTube video became a celebrated and award wining piece of journalism. Through this video and his comedic work in general, Daniel Samper Ospina has not only managed to exhibit disreputable political behavior, but he has also contributed to reinforce the values of legitimate journalism and to prove that humor can often be an honorable form of truth-telling.
