Save-the-Egg String Challenge

My studio class was divided into four separate groups. With our groups, we were aiming to create a system using only one type of string to move an egg into a can. However, there was a catch. The can was taped down to the floor and couldn’t move. Also, there was a hypothetical barrier around the egg and can that you couldn’t cross over.

Save the Egg

My group decided to construct a nest of gathered up string connected to four separate strings that were used to maneuver the center “nest” or “life raft.” Unfortunately, through trial and error, our invention was unsuccessful. The bundle of string at the center was too thick, making it impossible to slide under the egg in order to lift it above the ground and into the can. The moral of the story is that complex designs aren’t always the better ones. Simple designs can sometimes be the most obvious and practical solutions; less is more.
