My focus in all my photos was to do something new, which I successfully executed. This meant I had to reach outside my comfort zone a multitude of times to produce the work I wanted. This involved things like expressing myself more and using new equipment. I really wanted to focus on storytelling and different narratives in my photographs, however I wanted to do it in a more abstract way. To convey my concept and tell narratives in the photo essay deep travels I developed a more abstract sense of thinking. I took a lot of what I learned in this project and utilized it in my photo essay Self Revel. I struggled with deciding how to express myself in this project, but then I figured I would much rather speak to something that I have great care about. That would be, how the world consumes us and we are overtaken by such simple things. Water, was my way of doing this, the sense that there is a calmness yet overtaking power of water that consumes us. Usually we look at water and don’t think much but it has great power and like all things if you let it through your mind and spirit it will take over you. These photos are to show vulnerability of the human self to a mundane substance that is apart of us and surrounds our daily lives.

These photos all have very cool tones and utilize solitude to give them a morbid, dead feeling.

In our video we have decided to try to answer the question does destruction equal creation? We plan on the story line being linear and implementing ideas we have seen from A$AP music video LSD and the Adidas original campaign. The overall take away from these videos were the use of how color reflects mood, type of filming; such as stop motion, and angles. The plan is to start the video in a more urban and industrialized setting with the same subject across all the main key frames. Then as the video progresses the setting will become more earth like and naturistic. The mood will have some creepy undertones, maybe even provoke some sadness, and be nostalgic. As our group discussed setting we decided the final shot will be taken in central park being one of the greenest spaces around and start in a room surrounded by buildings. The in between footage will be minimal B-role and will require different subjects to make the video more relatable to more people yet also have more of a doing feel than viewer. We plan to shoot in thirty second blocks. The intended time will probably be around 2-2:30 minutes after all is edited.  Meanwhile, in the beginning we will have a voiceover which will increase in volume until there is a second of silence then the music segments will be spliced together. The footage will start more dark end get more lighthearted in the end, yet maintain the mood set i the begging. We plan to rent equipment to help with our ideas, work with as much natural light as possible. For the opening shots and scenes we plan to use a projector and utilize stop motion. We have figured for roles that each of us will help out in all areas;Alex will help with sound and mics, and do some filing, Mikae will work on the stop motion part of the filming, but when not filming help with lights and sound, and Karon will do most of the key frame filming, and when not filming help out the rest in our group. We will all work on editing together and do it by sections of the film.

artist statement Photo Essay 2

Everything in life has a breaking point and can be destroyed. We will not always be tranquil and there is a series of emotions and events that follow in the process of falling apart. My intention with this project was to evoke emotion through color utilizing masking, and even a transition from a  warmer black and white to a cooler monochrome. I wanted to promote a feeling and process thar for most is kept very personal. There is something impactful about exposing a private human life in the form of a material object.

There was a lot of symbolism in these photos and I want people to feel on a personal level something when they see these images. Although they are dark in concept this is one thing we struggle with and should bring more awareness to.

Art is to share, show, and express things no one wants to talk about, and the hidden things in life.

MOMI REVIEW

I resonate with the microphones because they offer and play such an important role in film.  It is really neat to see the evolution and the progression of how sound has improved over the years through new mics coming out. Music and ven voices just completely change the mood and emotion in film.  The impact is so great it engages the audience and really evokes feeling. In the sense of the persistence of vision it is an optical illusion with our minds. Having sound files that in for our mind versus a silent film it is almost like you can hear the motion.

I also resonated with the TV’s in the museum.  The style overall changed through the years, based on the targeted customer. This did not only speak to how sexist times were in the past but also plays into the prestanice of vision.  Being and optical illusion i think this is a neat concept that an illusion is deceiving and for the people buying the TV’s at the time they did not even know they were being deceived in such a sexist way and that is really corrupting and dehumanizing. This deception on gender ultimately belittled women and their role in daily life.

The more literal interpretation on the persistence of vision is the Kinetoscope, Zoetrope, and Thaumatrope. All these objects mess with our brains psychologically because our brain fills in the space in between the pictures making it look like a constant motion or video. This is something really neat that our brain just registers and being able to mess around and control the number of frames per second is cool. This really resonated with me because I find the psychology part so neat that is behind it. No matter how many pieces of advanced technology there are around us it is always fascinating.

Gallery Review

This first photo is successful because of the narrative and perspective.  This image has a really neat perspective being taken on the same line of sight as the subject being unger water. This gives us a very different narrative becausw ithought this perspective the way we interpret this image would be much different. This angle makes us feel like we are there and as the viewer we are more empathetic to the subject.  This photo is also compositionally great because the light is nice and diffused but also has an appealing shadow and reflection.

I really like this image because the feeling and mood you get as an observer. This image would not be the same if we were anywhere else. I think the fact the photographer took this photo through the windshield is very important and you can really feel an innocence of the child just playing. The composition is also enjoyable because it is a shallow depth of focus. It is more clear on the rain and more blurred on the child, however she is still clearly the subject and that is difficult to do but the photographer did a good job with telling a story through a challenging perspective.

This image is successful for it’s composition.  It has a nice shallow depth of focus and the subject is set perfectly in the middle. The photo does great job as well with the narrative.  The narrative in this image coincides with the color.  Being black and white the image overall has a more dark, sad, feeling. I enjoy this image for all the parts that make it up and I think the photographer was very purposeful in everything they did.
