Space/Materiality: Final Project Process Documentation

SPACE AND MATERIALITY PROCESS DOCUMENTATION

5 Research Images

Theme: Ancient Latin America (Mayan Civilization)

  1. Linear Iteration Model

Materials used: copper and steel wire

Explanation: I decided to make the primary structure of the linear model a coffin to house the necklace. Only a sturdy frame, which is about a fraction of the entire model, is made of copper wire.

3. Volumetric Iteration Model

Materials used: paper and tape

Explanation: For this one I was told to make the model bigger than the first iteration, so instead of just the coffin structure (which is on the inside), the model is now that of an entire Church.

4. Final Model

Materials used: 1/2 inch black foam core board, tape

Explanation: The final model is a combination of the linear and planar iteration models, the columns coming from the planar and the coffin case coming from the linear structure. The model is not functional like the final project but the top is meant to be a lid to pull the coffin case from out of the prison-like columns. The inspiration comes from the window design on ancient Mayan buildings.

5. Final Project

Materials used: Plywood, Screws, 1/4 inch dowels, 1/8 inch dowels

Explanation: Unlike the final model, the final project is fully functional, and the top comes off like a lid where I can place/remove my object from the coffin. The inspiration of this comes from the temples of the Mayans from my research images. Making my project half a case and half a safe gives it a sanctuary-like atmosphere, and heavily protects the object.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, my project is a gimmick mainly because of the lid mechanism. It is definitely well put together besides the 2 split columns due to the screws. One automatic negative would be that the final project is not painted, therefore it looks a bit ugly. The thing I enjoyed most about making this was creating perfect circles for the base and top ONLY by sanding. If I had to redo this, I probably wouldn’t. I think I need only refine this first model.
