Natural Dye Experiment: Results and Reflection

The Dye experiment ended up being challenging, and the results were not as fruitful as expected. When I first began to wash the wool in the sink, I used soap as instructed, however the wool did not once obtain the dreadlock texture mentioned in class. I tried both hot and cold water, neither of which seemed to be more useful than the other. Following the washing, it had been about thirty-five minutes since I began boiling the water with my dye source: red onions. I then labeled the muslin sheets and the wool by number (1 through 8), and left 1 each out of the dye. When I pulled the wool out, all that was evident was a change in color, from the original white to a faint, urine-like yellow. Then I placed each of the wool+muslin sheets into one of the mordants at a time. My custom mordant was olive oil. After leaving them for about 15 minutes in the mordants, none of them seemed to have any drastic color change. Overall, the results of this experiment could have been better. If I had to change anything, I would probably boil the water for the dye at a higher heating temperature.
