New Studio

The New Studio is my final project of Major Studio I at Parsons The New School for Design. This social network aims to build an infrastructure for students to share their work with their peers. This medium will serve as liaison between students, faculty and community of designers. The ideal scenario of this act would lead into a publication that will be generated automatically from the content shared on the profiles, and reviewed and qualified by all the users. In this writing Ill explain the knots and bolts of this network that will run on itself, and admits to work better than a machine.

“Assemblages are not governed by any central head: no one materiality or type of material has sufficient competence to determine consistently the trajectory or impact of the group.” *

My background is in engineering management and at the same time I study the publications that use photo with text. In this project I will implement my engineer analytics with my photography sense into a design practice. In the time of design and technology, we don’t have an actual space to work and create our artificial objects. So our laptops could be assumed the point of this project, that our new studios need a network for sharing and seeing the work of art and experiments. I chose the audience of this work to be the students that are having the same education as I am studying in the same place. I noticed the notion of having different interpretations from the same source of knowledge that we share in our everyday studies.

In order to have a better understanding of this pattern for students and also have an interest around the subject matter, the users of this network will need to submit their work, easily with email, in two categories. One is text, and two will be the moving image, for documenting the experiences of visual creations. I understand these two sections work together to impress an image on the mind. The deployment that image is there to utter it and hear the word in format of a finished project. Image would be obscene. And word may embed the scenery. To transfer itself, photo/video may do that. Yet writing the image looks for transformation of the moment in the picture. Picture of the author. Picture of the photographer. Picture of eye. Picture of me. Picture of text. Picture of prose. Picture of language. Picture of there. Picture of I think. Picture of happening. Picture of Subject and Image. Picture of observing. Picture of Black and White. And the forced image on pictures in our minds, memories, thoughts, sleeps, naps, allegories, in and outs. It is hence the reader-viewer whose birth was also hailed by Roland Barthes (in The Death of the Author) – who becomes the constant in the infinite play between word and image, linking them both and tying them down to a political setting.

Ideally, users will use tags to categorize their work and make them searchable on this database. Also viewers will have the option to leave feelings based on the experiment of reading the works in a brave action. Actually the most-viewed works of the month that are having the most used tags of all the people involved in this structure will get printed into a publication. This process will be automatically happen from a printer that is located in a public space of New School. This hybrid publication will serve the community that is experiencing the role of author and editor, hopefully other than the initiator.
