STRAP247

STRAP247

Transforming a material that is guilty of polluting all areas of our planet into a durable useful object, this camera strap is made out of unrecyclable plastic bags. By first collecting plastic bags that would end up in a landfill or worse, I rolled up and compacted every bag into a long extended line. Then, by tying the three types all together at an anchor point, I began braiding the chords of plastic together. Making sure to keep it held tightly, I intertwined the different plastics to make an ever more durable structure. After having tied them, a quick heat press to secure it allows its long lasting usable life as well as comfort for the user.

Containing plastic types 2 (High Density Polyethylene), 4 (Low-Density Polyethylene) and 7 (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene) , every camera strap would use up to 27 plastic bags. If every strap in the Parsons Equipment Center were a STRAP247, there would be over 3000 less plastic bags ending up in landfills or in the ocean. When considering the use given to virtually useless material, this can be applied in so many different ways and help reduce the massive waste we create. Every year, the US only uses 100 billion plastic bags. STRAP247 aims to diffuse the waste by repurposing it in ways to improve our lifestyle and the way we capture it.
