Space/Materiality: Integrated Cultural Self-Portrait in Tile

For this project, each of us had to have a piece of ¾” Birch Plywood 24” x 24”. In class, we discuss a series of concept drawings that show “how individual student tiles can be integrated with other students’ tiles.” I brought with an idea of making puzzle shape together because I thought it would be interesting to make a design for a puzzle that matches each other. Among these ideas, we vote four best ideas and made into a smaller model to see how would it works. Our class finally decided to do Yuki’s model.

The week after, everyone brought their wood and made an actual model to see if it works.

Also, during this class, we had opportunity to see professor’s wood which was a great guide for me.

Drawings(Sketches):

1. Shelf

For the shelf, I basically reused one part of bowery joinery wood which is from our previous joinery project. I cut out a quarter of the depth to make it more stable.

2. Door

I first briefly sketched on the wood with measurements. I used machine saw to cut out four wood pieces for the frame of the door, and I used sandpaper to have perfect fitting together. For the door part, I used leftover wood pieces from the previous project. I connected the frame and an actual door by an attaching hinge in between.

  • I couldn’t take picture, but as you can see in my drawing, I glued a small secret note on the back side of one of the frame.

3. Window

I would say that window was most challenging part throughout this project. In order to make 5″ x 5″ glass stably fit in the wood, we had to carved wood by the depth of the window. Even though I used biggest size of chisel, it was so tough to carve in depth.

4. Pocket

I would say pocket was the easiest part of this project. I just had to cut out my leftover t-shirts and attach to wood by applying tacks on it. Tacks easily went through the wood with hammer even I put a very little strength.

5. Drawer

I honestly couldn’t work on drawer yet.

<Final Painting>

Since I thought painting is one of the essential way to express my identity, I put a lot of effort into it. Overall theme of my painting is flower, which is my favorite object in my life. Also I have so many precious memories related to flowers which evoke my emotions a lot. I wanted to show those mixed positive feelings of myself through using bright color of acrylic paintings with putting some of abstract part.

Objects for each part of tile

  1. Shelf: perfume that has daisy flower fragrant (one of my favorite perfume and its fragrant well associate with my theme)
  2. Door: photo of friends and me taken on my birthday
  3. Window: Stickers that I collected it (collecting stickers is my habit starting from a very young age)
  4. Pocket: Wasabi cracker (one of my favorite snacks)

Overall, I am very satisfied with the project even though it was so challenging because I put a lot of effort. Even though I am still bad and wood working, I think I am very improved comparing to joinery project we had before. Moreover, I didn’t had any opportunities to paint in any other class that I had at Parsons. I really love to paint, so this project was like a therapeutic outlet that allows me to vent my passions, stress, and thoughts to capture a reflection of who I am or what I am feeling at a given moment.
