Space/Materiality: Precious Cargo

This assignment is basically sending a single egg(given by the professor which has a unique rubber stamp on it) to professor’s house intactly. Our goal for this project was to create an effective packaging system for fragile objects in a fastest and cheapest way of shipping.

Unfortunately, on the day he gave an egg, I accidentally broke my first egg. Therefore, I had to request a replacement egg which will be the last one. So, I even protected more while bringing at home to avoid accidents.

As I came back to home, I immediately searched for the best way to ship fragile objects. However, I felt like i don’t see lots of creativity or wether it’s expensive, so I decided to find materials at my home which will cost zero money on buying materials.

I collected some materials at home that I thought it would be useful: leftover cotton balls, plastic cups, pipe cleaners, and straws. Then, I played with those materials to find most best way and I briefly sketched final idea.

Sketch:

Plan: Fill the cup with the cotton balls and putt an egg in the middle of the cup where every sides of egg faces cotton balls. Then, block the top of plastic cup with a tape to avoid falling apart.

Process:

*I forgot to take pictures of my process(only had taken photo after I all packed), so I put photos that I took after getting back from professor.

Since this assignment is better to send earlier(failure after 4 weeks), I tried to send it asap. However, it didn’t really worked well cause I was kept postponing due to other stuffs going on me: I finally was able to send on April 12th.

Budget: total $7.35

$0 for materials, $7.35 for shipping

I received an email from professor the day after I send it. Thankfully, my egg arrived on Saturday intact.

Conclusion:

This project was very unique and interesting assignment that I’ve ever had. Overall, I think I am successfully done with the assignment and I am satisfied with my method. Moreover, this assignment was a great opportunity to learn how to pack and ship fragile objects which I think it will be very useful to know for the future needs.
