Natural Dye Design Project
In this project, we are using the Natural Dye Experiment to visualize the pollution level in different water samples in NYC. As a fashion design major, I decided to create a mini collection of tie-dye t-shirts that are dyed with varying samples of water in NYC. It would result in four different tones/colors of t-shirts: purple, blue, turquoise, and green. I especially chose the tie-dye technique because it was back in fashion as one of the big trends in the fashion industry starting summer 2019 and even started to make a rise in its comeback for 2020. Also, a t-shirt is the most common and regular clothing that people wear in general, so I thought it would be great if I could make a garment that provides both a message and an aesthetic look. The goal is to create awareness of the pollution in NYC Water Systems. Therefore, I put each different pH level as a logo and perform the source of water on the backside. To make people wear them daily, I personally thought the design of clothing should not look too forceful or aggressive. That’s why I distribute the information into two different parts, front and back, and try to emphasize the phrase in a bold font with a common focus on giving awareness to people about the fact.
