In order to speak on what an urban phenomenon is, we must strip each section of the word down and understand each in its own root. In a scientific context, one would state a phenomenon is something that is observed to occur or to exist. By contrast, the general understanding and usage of the word is in a sense that something is extraordinary or outstanding. Phenomena are categorized in numerous ways. Here are a few examples: natural phenomena, social phenomena, psychological phenomena, visual phenomena and urban phenomena.
