I did this drawing in my first semester at Parsons freshman year in a class called Drawing and Imaging. I had never been taught to draw before. The assignment was to go to the Rubin Museum, choose any object, and then draw it. The goal was to draw a sculpture in person, using our eyes to take in the lighting, depth, material, and surface of the piece, instead of drawing from an image. We were to use the drawing “tools” we learned to make sure our proportions were correct, our shading helped create depth, etc. This entire experience was new an challenging, and pushed me to use my eyes in a new way. The final drawing proved to me that I did have some drawing skills. I also learned the importance of proper shading and the magic of erasing afterwards.
