Challenges of prototyping – Studio

As I was creating my project I went through some challenges when faced with the different processes we learned in class. The most important processes for me were prototyping and community engagement. It was crucial to engage the community with this interactive sculpture. Some challenges with this was the size and location of where I put the board. Depending on the time of day most people would just walk by it and stare. Then I realized the perfect time to go was around lunch time. This is when people started to stop and pay attention to the question. Most stood there for a minute to think about their answer. Though the question isn’t a complicated one, It did accomplish my goal.
While building the prototype, I was surprised with some difficulties. I needed to test different materials and methods for the board to stay in place. If the board was in uncomfortable place, people wouldn’t stop to write on it. This taught me how it important it is to test things early in the process, that way it doesn’t become a problem later on. It had to be big enough to catch peoples’ attention so they would stay and write what they thought. People can use this art piece to learn more about New York and discover new likes.
