Self Portrait
Description:
Through the process of making my self-portrait, I relied on various parts of the “I remember” list such as looking at the aspect of traveling and its influences on my life. I noticed how I talked a lot about moving and its pressures. At the same time I also mentioned the societal and family pressures that was causing me to question my own belief. For example, I mentioned how I wanted to become a tennis player, an astronaut or a designer and how people had influenced my decisions and my future. The “I remember” list was really helpful through the process of creating the portrait it gave me clarity on who I am as a person. I wanted to convey that in my portrait as I noticed the “expectations” and my inner self being evident in the list. It gave me a better understand of myself. In actuality I hadn’t realized how diverse and different I am. My traveling and family has driven me to become the person I am today.
Throughout making the portrait, I kept diverging from my initial idea since I wanted the work to speak for itself rather than following an explanation. I later came to a conclusion that having it more subtle creates mystery and openness to new interpretations. I am satisfied with the creation since it is dynamic and is interesting when looked through light or normality. I however wasn’t able to complete it to the extent as which I wanted it. When I left it unfinished and took it to class, I was a little apprehensive thinking that they would raise on the incompleteness of it and its vagueness. However quite the contrary. Instead they praised me for the artistic touch and the creativity. It was really helpful once I got the critique since I was able to see it in different light and get a sense of satisfaction in its incompleteness. Rather than using lot of ideas, they liked that I was being simplistic and letting people have their own interpretations. I would do it slightly different if I were given the opportunity. I would try to use paint rather than sticking to the traditional route and solely relying on pencil and observation drawing. Looking at my peers’ work I would like to take a more creative approach and not use material but rather words, pictures and other materials to make the portrait. However I am happy with how it turned out.
