Process

A project that immediately comes to mind regarding the ‘process’ as discussed in class was my final project in Studio class last semester. We each had to create a piece to reflect the persona our partner created, selecting a few details to create it.

I began this process by writing down all the aspects of the persona, and then commenced on the possible sketches for the design, milling through all ideas. I actually restarted every single idea, until I came with the idea of a tie to reflect the work aspect. In this case, my partner’s persona was a doctor with a gambling problem and who secretly love to dance. So, I came up with the inspiration of creating a doctors bag, but inside have a secret base, which is where he placed what ever he pleased, following the persona’s character. I began creating an outline of what I need to create, and possible ideas of how to do so. Then I began the creation of making the actual bag. I did this through trial and error, but eventually I got a self-standing bag that actually opened like a doctors bag and see the secret compartment inside.

After the critique a certain point that was brought up was the actual material of the bag. I had chosen a purplish tinge of leather as it was cheaper, and well I decided to make the representation of one. Of course once the critique was finished I fixed up certain details to which were easier, but I didn’t dare change the material as that would mean restarting from scratch –this took way too long. I never actually re-visited the project, as it was a first bag-based object I created.

Firstly, I regret not seeking more help in the actual production and stabilization of the bag, as it is literally being held together by chipboard and glue. The other thing would be the change of material. Not because I personally don’t want it, or prefer to change it, but because it was the one detail that seemed to mislead people that it was not a doctor’s bag; luckily the shape did. Following a process is much like following a recipe. I personally generally create an outline first before I just dive in as to me an outline is a visual map. Then I create a general paper, much like a general over view of the doctor’s bag, and then I attempt the final product, which is generally titled as a draft. In this case, I did not review and redo the final project as highly recommended.
