Alice in Wonderland: A Retelling

I made these last semester for my time class

The brief for this assignment was to re-imagine and narrate the classic, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, in a given number of pages. I focused on the chaotic experience of confusion, delirium, disillusion and entertainment, that the novel invokes in the reader, to create a dystopian version of Wonderland. Hence the spreads reveal a tragic tea party, with the participants, dead in their seats, Alice’s head stuck to her neck with a wad of gum. The party is hosted by the mad hatter who wears in his hat, the bodies of all his friends who will never leave him (because he killed them, after luring them to the tea party and they are too busy being dead to escape).they also reveal an Absolem addicted to his pipe and the Queen’s servants painting the roses frantically in garter belts. Their dystopian avatars are accompanied by phrases from the book that capture the madness in their characters the best. The cover page and final page reveal another version of wonderland. This version celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the book, and the the fact that it continues to have such a lasting presence in our lives and popular culture. Here Wonderland is New York City, and the different characters come from various boroughs of the city. Alice is and escaped convicted stuck in prison clothes a tad bit small for her, Absolem is a drug dealer and a pimp. The mad hatter is homeless man who makes hats with found objects. They live in downtown Manhattan. The Queen of hearts is a wealthy lady, who compensates for her height with her ego and pride, and hails from The Upper East Side. The knave of hearts is a struggling amateur artist in Brooklyn, who takes up odd jobs painting theatre props. The Cheshire cat is a wanna be model, also from Brooklyn, who idolizes Marilyn Monroe. Finally, the White Rabbit is a playboy bunny, who visits the city during fashion week.
