New York, A Palimpsest

map

My experiences from my short trip tell me that the city of New York is a palimpsest because I saw a lot of mixture of old and new in terms of infrastructure as well as people and societies. I visited the park on 6th avenue and Christopher Street. The park was simply a gem. The beauty of that tiny little park really refreshed my mind having visited it in the midst of a normal college day for me. In concrete jungles like New York coming across a park which respects your solitude is very rare and this was that kind of a place. The library adjacent to the park I saw had a very 19th centaury infrastructural façade but paradoxically the library on the inside which I could see from its huge windows looked very modern to me. The park was tiny and resplendent with all the trees, bushes and flowers and there were only old or middle-aged people in there inspecting pots on tables. This was very different from the world outside the park where I could only see young men and woman busy with their work or daily lives.
