Reconstructing Times Square

 1. Analyzing ‘Space & Place’ at MOMA and Times Square

On my trip to MOMA I payed close attention to paintings which had combinations of elements that gave viewers the illusion of space such as the Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth (1948), above. The painting plays with lights and darks, perspective – objects closer are bigger than the ones in the far distance. There greater detail up front than at the back. Creates the illusion of space successfully.

I then went to visit Times Square and analyze the space and people out there. The tall rise buildings spaced out against the sky juxtaposed to the crowd of people on ground, Times Square is one place where one can really analyze space. A diverse array of people as well. People from all walks of life, tourists, people going to office, people doing nothing, artists, people without whom Times Square wouldn’t actually make sense because they are very much a part of the idea of Times Square.

2. Working with Perspective Lines

We analyzed space by drawing perspective lines over pictures we had taken at Times Square on Adobe Illustrator and on newspaper clippings we had collected over the semester by hand (1 point, 2 point and 3 point).

3. Reconstructing Times Square

While reconstructing Times Square, I had in mind the idea of  European architecture and lots of clocks all over the buildings. Because I live in Switzerland, a lot of the work I do always takes from the European culture and society. I decided to make the buildings colorful because I was inspired by the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg Russia. I first made a perspective drawing of my imagined Times Square and then worked on it on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to add in colors, textures and people to make the space believable.
