ITEMS : Is Fashion Modern

I was most intrigued by the Richard Malone jumpsuit specimen at the exhibition. Keeping the exhibition brief in mind I felt that this jumpsuit was a part of the exhibit as it stood example for a groundbreaking, unique prototype. The jumpsuit displayed an exceptional sense of sustainable design, technology and innovation techniques. It also manages to break several stereotypes people generally hold against the form of a jumpsuit and sustainable fashion that people don’t really see as exciting couture. This jumpsuit is nothing like what one would find in my dress practice, nor representative of my identity but looking at it makes me want to own it. It’s so interesting to see how the organic and inorganic forms on the jumpsuit interact with each other and then further interact with the body. It’s almost like the act of wearing an optical illusion. The fit of the suit as well adds to its character, body fitting all the way up to the knees and then a loose flair. I feel like when this jumpsuit interacts with any body it would make that person look taller.

This jumpsuit contributes greatly to the present culture of the fashion industry that is inclined towards sustainable production of garments. I think it’s thought provoking and inspiring for many of us young designers. The jumpsuit speaks volumes regarding the endless possibilities of creating garments with recycled materials, and the questionable stereotypical images of clothes and forms we have in our minds. As designers it is imperative for us to learn from the archetypical and the stereotypical but in order to keep up with the modern times, the future, we must go beyond just that.
