In the podcast On Being with Krista Tippett, Stuart Brown is interviewed about Play, Spirit, and Character. Brown brings up interesting facts about the effects play has on a developing child, including developing social skills, talents, and empathy. Playscapes many working elements to them that can be categorized as effective or ineffective. Effective would be the design of a playscape that works to promote inclusivity, ineffective would be perhaps a bully or group that disrupts the natural playing environment. All in all, there are many factors that play into how a playscape works and the study of it is key to creating a mentally healthier next generation. It is shown that exclusivity and separation from playtime have shown negative effects that range from minimal such as social awkwardness, to the rare extreme of children growing up and becoming serial killers. With my partner Alex we will design an interactive playscape that will promote inclusivity and a quite literal reflection. We will be constructing a box with a mirrored creating a sense of infinity as well as have a climbing element on the exterior of the box. The climbing exterior is in response to one article in the National Institute of play that talks about the benefits of climbing and the skills that it helps children develop on their own. The goal we need to reach as a society is to destroy the paradigm me that children are weak and the world is dangerous, as it is true that there is danger in this world, if children do not learn to conquer their fears and go beyond the restrictions that have been put in place by past generations than development in the next generation will continue to be warped and distorted resulting in negative outcomes.
