Project One – Photoshoot

The destination of my photoshoot of the garment was Mott Street Chinatown. On this street, there were several backgrounds and photo opportunities that fit within the concept of the garment. Golden hour was an important aspect and element we considered in the photoshoot since the concept of the design was sheltering from people and the sun. Having the golden sun, reflecting on the models face shows the purpose of the design, as it slightly covers her head from the sunlight. The angles in the shoot focused on the model’s upper body since that was the major element of the garment design. We used a red and yellow background in many photographs, to ensure the photo’s looked cohesive with the red and yellow garment.

Project One- Logo

This logo I created represents the idea behind my brand and garment piece. The lines on the side represent the traditional Chinese fan’s used in their culture, which I have ensured it’s simple so I don’t take away attention from the text.  In my product description, I explained the idea of the beauty of paleness in the Chinese culture. The garment name “Hidden Beauty” symbolises this idea of Beauty underneath the shelter.

Project One- Mood board

The mood board I created explores and represents the theme of shelter, as well as my inspiration from the Chinatown and Met visit. By brainstorming the idea of shelter, it enabled me to have a clearer outlook on how this issue may affect people in Chinatown. I focused on the idea of ‘shelter from people’ and ‘shelter from the sun’ and how the people in Chinatown responded to this issue. I noticed that in Chinatown people used umbrellas to mask themselves from the blaring sunlight. By incorporating elements that represent those ideas, as well as garment construction ideas, it enabled me to form a more cohesive garment piece, that will be beneficial and fit in within the Chinatown environment.

Project One- Garment Idea’s

Idea One:

This design incorporates the element of shelter from the sun and the people, by using a large headpiece that attaches to a skirt, forming a shelter from the sun and the people around you. The inspiration for this headpiece came from the ‘Heavenly Bodies’ exhibition at the MET, where one of the designers used a similar headpiece influenced by the Roman Catholic tradition while symbolising religious references during that time. The Chinatown environment is incorporated into the shelter design through the traditional red and white that will be used throughout the garment, as well as the traditional Chinese fan detailing, that will be sewed onto the garment, to ensure the garment fits its required environment.

Idea Two:

Design two focuses on the idea of shelter, through the traditional Chinese fans by incorporating them onto the sleeves of the design and by also creating a headpiece made by using them too. This adds to the cultural environment aspect of the design, by following and using traditional Chinese accessories, but also exploring the idea of shelter and how fans create shelter, as well as personal space. The fans will be attached along with a light silk material, to shelter the rest of the body and give the garment wearer personal space from its environment.
