Jeaneology Project statement
The theme of this project is to create a pair of jeans using denim for a particular occupation. Otherwise, we are required to using methods of pattern making, fitting, merrowing, edc. We practiced and reviewed the skills of flat felt, making a front and back pocket, and attaching a zipper. For the occupation, gardener was the first thing came to my mind. Similar to fashion designers, they are sophisticated artists designing for the whole garden all about love, taking care of all his flowers. Gardening is similar to life that teaches us a lot: to hold a big vision, to be patience, to be willingly to deal with troubles, edc. And the usual outwear for gardeners are always being plain and pale, I would like to combine the idea of flowers into the durable woking jeans.
The process was pretty successful along the way, tracing and changing from the size 30 pattern of jeans, I made a pattern of jeans for myself. I started with the muslim as usual, from the front placket to pockets, from the zipper to the crotch, I connected each piece according to the instruction. During the process, my crotch got too low since this is a high-waist jeans, Andrea helped me to alter the crotch of the pattern higher and shorter so that my crotch can get smaller and higher. Also, my down thigh got to small, I also moved them outward for ¼ of an inch for each side. After cleaning and smoothing the pattern lines, lowers the center waist to make more movement for the buttonhole, and designing a waist band for my jeans, I started my real fabric. For the first time, it was too big at the thigh, so that I trimmed down of the sides. And also for the flat felt, it was hard to band some part of the fabric which have more than six layers where we would sew on that, I just ironed it more. Besides the yoke center, yoke button, back piece top, I forgot to flat felt the inside crotch, and I found that’s why my pattern if off. I added the ⅝ inch at the outside seam allowance not the inside so that my pants get bigger at sides. And there’s one problem that I still have is that after the trim, I left my coin pocket at the side which is too small, and the pocket size is too small too. But I can’t go back. Instead of making a curved waistband, I made a straight one, so it doesn’t stick to my waist. Andrea helped me to add on a dart and it is perfectly fit now. For the design part, I added my flower-like pattern on the position of kneel to act as a padding.
From this project, I learned a lot how important the big vision and the plan is, because the whole process is based on the plan. While I am making my design, the accuracy should be clearly marked, like where is the flat felt exactly is, and where pockets are exactly located. All of above are as important as design. Also, like a gardener, I need to be more patient as there will be hundred of time to take original things apart again and again for every mistake I made. As people said and like a designer, “. You have to learn how to deal with things that are totally out of your control.”
This was my first pants I ever made, it wasn’t so hard as I imagined, and I am sure I will make a much better one in the future.
