Voluminicity
This project, every of us is going to make a dress based on a specific silhouette, and what I chose was baby doll silhouette that has an empire waist and spread skirt at the bottom. Our theme of this project is voluminosity that we are supposed to use shapes of different sizes of boxes as inspirations for our skirt. We are required to have princess seam, a pocket, and lining in our dress. For mine, I have the princess seam on my bodice, the whole lining at the back of the bodice, and a pocket at the right side. The aim of this project is going out of design that we draped based on grouped boxes, and created shapes out of the boxes.
Voluminosity is a popular trend in modern fashion that creates a big silhouette and totally different effect. The volume creates powerful and impressive style, which barely address the body self but break the body shape. For my style, I always design clothing fitted and s-curve revealing, so that this project is kind of my ultra-ego.
For the design part, the baby doll silhouette I chose has expansion space on the skirt part. Therefore I used the draped shape out of balls, and grouped and layered them for the skirt. And the fabric I used was neon print with a fabulous pattern of colorful birds. The fabric itself is heavy so that Professor helps me to figure it out by layering interfacing at the back to make it stay stiff and in shapes.
The biggest difficult I met was dealing with elastic, which sustain the ball shape of the fabric so that it goes all over the round fabric pieces for the skirt. It went all well when I manipulated it with muslim, but when I layered the first round balls to the second layer, the elastic was so strong that keeps the shape upwards. There’s no drapery effect as I imagined because I sew all the pieces all around instead of adding extra pieces of fabric to keep every of the ball shape separately. Therefore, the final effect is that the skirt is very short, even is the boning doesn’t add weight to it. However, this is the first time I use boning as well, it really keeps good circular shape for fabric and leave the voluminous space. And I enjoyed cooperate with the zipper and the pocket.
Voluminous dress is popular for its ease, comfort, and convenience. And we added pockets and zipper, which also used for convenience and function. Using of elastic is convenient in a way of creation of different sizes of people, that it expands. For the future design, I think I will use more of the lining, that really make quality of the clothing, and elastic, that is so multifunctional to work with.
