Critical Studio: Culture final

The black&white hand drawing one is the tattoo I made to offense the culture I chose. The cloth I drew was a formal gown dress that only high level of the emperor’s wives could wear. It has national flower of China on the collar and belt. The offensive part of it is the Chinese character of “kimono” written on the sleeves. Intentionally, I’m saying that it is ok if someone from outside of Chinese culture ask whether a traditional cloth is from China, or Japan, or Korea, but it not ok when a Chinese not correcting other people when they were wrong. Every time I saw a Chinese or Taiwanese kept silence like this, I really wanted to punch them, seriously. If you are not appreciating or respecting your own cultural background, then please tell other people that your are an alien.

The yellow and red dress is the pattern I made to appreciate. I traced some style and some decoration in Illustrator to make a single one. It is a typical dress style worn by everyday people, because of the huge sleeves and low neck line are the feature of late Tang as the western idea of women bodies are brought to China so that women are willing to show off their body more. Before Tang or in the early Tang, only women working in specific field would wear a gown dress with low neck line like this. But this particular one could be wear only on rich family because the original fabric is high quality silk. To the pattern generally, I wanted it be on the wrap paper or something like that for a haute couture traditional clothing.
