This is one of my favourite scenes from A Touch of Sin.
I felt pretty complicated to be honest, when I find out that it is this movie which was assigned for us to watch because I have wanted to watch it for years! Jia Zhangke is one of my favourite director and these are THE BEST ACTORS AND ACTRESSES for this movie for sure!
I remember reading news and hearing about all these crimes in reality so that watching it as a movie really make all the stories very visible. By visible I mean even though I had been travelled to nearly half of the provinces of China with friends or mom but it is still hard to really go to the poor village and factories to really see how people live.
From artistic aspect, using animals and opera as metaphor really works for me. I think it is very smart and very Jia Zhangke. This is the advantage of telling stories from an inside aspect. It feels like making some kind of distance from all the audience who didn’t know these crimes so that once you finish the movie and do some research you will appreciate the whole piece so much. Talking about appreciation, just wanted to mentioned that I talked about this movie with my apartment mate who is a screenwriter and director currently studying documentary at SVA, and she said this movie earned almost hundred percent of hate in China but the opposite in Berlin movie festival. Which, is pretty ironic to me for some reason.
This is my most memorable scene from the movie. I have to admit after watching A Touch of Sin, I cannot really get out of it so I have a little distracted while watching We Are The Best.
I feel like this movie is all about youth and I really like how the movie depict the sensitive part of teenage girls. Definitely better than High School Musical. (I have no idea why it reminds me of High School Musical though)
I enjoyed watching how the girls fight each other. It is just so real. When she spits herself in the mirror, I feel that she is so mature in that second and that’s what I don’t really want to see. I mean this action makes this character so much fruitful but I just prefer all the girls to stay in their youth.
By the way, Hedvig is SO pretty!!! and cool!!! and she is perfectly my type if I want to date a girl in the future.
