Alan Motoko – Final Project Documentation for Core Studio and Lab

(Previous documentation about project is here : http://portfolio.newschool.edu/tangyi/2015/04/15/final-project-proposal-of-core-studio/. It is a project proposal documentation.)

Final Garment Board 2 - Yi Tang

This project is inspired by a story I wrote which you could find in the post I mentioned above. My inspiration also came from the first Studio project I made, Alan Motoko. It’s about real of false, the uncertainty of truth.

As I was creating a presentation for the garment I made, which was also inspired by this theme, I chose projection as the form of this show. I do so because the projection, the light creates illusion which people really to see it, read it, and think it, at the same time it doesn’t really has a physical being of what it shows. This realness/falseness is connected to what I’m trying to show. Also, in the Cave story in Republic, the projection of the fire was also be interpreted as fantasy/fakeness.

So at the beginning, I chose to use projection. Though I found an inspiring example, which uses three faces screen-projection, with movement-responsive visualization effect. Soon, step by step, I abandoned copying the same solution, as I found the limit of conditions and as I build my own system. And my final decision is using Kinect to detect body movement, then collect the data and put it in open frameworks. Then use open frameworks to do the content of projection, like movement-trigger, draw the human contour, and movement-responsive visual effect.

It’s a hard time to start everything since I got zero background in OF and Kinect. Finally I chose to use openTSPS, which can collect data from Kinect and analyze to make IR data object, and send the poison data, size data etc to OSC channel. And then I use OF to receive the data and make interesting stuff.

Talking about the content of the projection, I used some video clips I really …

HERE I’M GONNA UPDATE LATER

The final result is the video recording I took in Room 1200 on D12 after I fight with MFA thesis student to get the space. I put the projection part video between two reality shots. You can check the video here.

HERE IS THE CODING PART, DEDICATED FOR MICHAEL…

I’ve upload the whole OF sketches in Google Drive, and I’ll send the shared link to Justin and Michael’s email since it’s too big to show here.

Some codes might not be well shown in the vide:

– In the flight part, the alpha changes with the raising of the guy.

-There is also sound alpha changes

-The rocket/space part video, is flashing because it flashes responsively to the heartbeat sound at the background.

Thanks for those who wrote code which saved the dumb beginner me:

– the sketch uses the default example in OF, OSC receiver, to utilize the OSC channel.

– Thanks Justin who introduced openTSPS, which read Kinect and analyze block, and offers me the object’s position, velocity and width/height etc.

– the particle was tweaked based on A Thousand Ball sketch made by someone. (I have to ask Yumeng to credit this guy since I got this sketch form Yumeng.) Anyway!!! I tweaked it a lot!!!

-THAT’S ALL

As world becoming "digitalized", I am exploring the complex correlation between the digital and the physical, the virtual and the real. Through research and project, I'm answering how virtual and digital experience is perceived, and how it can be better applied, along with things like physical computing, to people's life for better working and living experience. I’ve done various forms of project: wearable technology, digital interactive graphics, data visualization, short films and UX design for company collaboration system. I have never limit the possibility of learning and taking use of new forms or new materials. Like a vintage typewriter that uses intelligent coding to type out a poem to wake you up, a short research documentary to observe how people perceive the fake but virtual information embedded in a daily life environment, a raincoat that seal itself using magnets. Actually, most of my works challenged the application of new materials and new forms, while deliver interaction with human experience in a respectful and playful way.
