Extra Credit Assignment on NYC Zero Waste Pledge

I went to the NYC Zero Waste Pledge website. It is a website where you as someone who lives in New York City can know about what you can do to recycle the things you use in your life in order to protect the environment, reduce the waste and help to take use of these materials.

To me, interesting things in this page would be instructions to recycle food scrapes and yard waste, how to recycle electronic waste and how to donate clothing and textiles.

To my surprise, one-third of the waste that the NYC Department of Sanitation collects was comprised of organics or organic waste like food scraps, spoiled food, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings and plants. In the video shown on the “Food Scraps + Yard Waste” page, two ladies demonstrated how to collect the kitchen waste as you are preparing the food for cooking cutting and peeling vegetables or fruits. One should prepare a small bag or container to collect these scraps and then send it to the staff that can process the scrapes into the fertilizer for enriching the soil. In this way, the food waste or scrapes can be recycled to become something that is useful for environmentally friendly fertilizer. I would say it actually sounds tedious to follow the suggestions given in the video, just think about people already prefer to eat out than cooking at home because of the convenience.

And if someone wants to recycle electronic waste, he or she can bring the unwanted electronic devices or appliances to designated place like temporary recycling events, or some organizations or stores that will provide free recycle services. It’s important for people to properly abandon the electronic waste as we nowadays are using more and more electronic products we are creating more waste. And the electronic waste has the potential to do a lot harm to the natural resources and the place we’re living in. I’d say it was kind of necessary for future residential building to include functions of recycling different kind of trash or waste, specially electronic waste. To me, I think I learned a lot about how can I recycle different waste I generated in the city of New York. I used to have the problem with how to properly abandon the electronic waste and parts from computer or batteries. Now I have idea about how to recycle these things away. And also it is good to that if you improperly abandon the electronic trash or waste, it might be illegal.

And again, I see recycling suggestion for clothing and textiles. We’ve already learned that fashion/clothing has been one of the most wasted industry on earth. And consumers should be responsible to recycle their garments properly. According to the suggestions online, you can donate your used clothing via donateNYC, or possible refashion NYC recycling place around you. Surely personally I know all the Uniqlo store also accept the used garments for recycling and they will clean them to send to the people in need.

And it is wonderful that they give out tote bag for people who made the pledge!! LOL

As world becoming "digitalized", I am exploring the complex correlation between the digital and the physical, the virtual and the real. Through research and project, I'm answering how virtual and digital experience is perceived, and how it can be better applied, along with things like physical computing, to people's life for better working and living experience. I’ve done various forms of project: wearable technology, digital interactive graphics, data visualization, short films and UX design for company collaboration system. I have never limit the possibility of learning and taking use of new forms or new materials. Like a vintage typewriter that uses intelligent coding to type out a poem to wake you up, a short research documentary to observe how people perceive the fake but virtual information embedded in a daily life environment, a raincoat that seal itself using magnets. Actually, most of my works challenged the application of new materials and new forms, while deliver interaction with human experience in a respectful and playful way.
